Reusable Cups At Starbucks; Everything You Need To Know

Save the planet, one coffee at a time!

Recent COVID19 regulations have seen many companies/businesses return to what looks like their regular practice. To name a few:
Costco has been beginning the return of its in-Store samples while Target has re-opened its fitting rooms. And Starbucks is not an exception to this trend!

If you own a reusable collapsible coffee cup, odds are you are wondering if you can use it at your local coffeehouse. And if you don't have one yet, I bet you are also wondering the same thing!

With over 32 thousand retail locations/stores across the globe, Starbucks is THAT local coffeehouse familiar to most cities. They are the leading coffeehouse company and by far the largest one in the world. But (as seen from their actions), corporate success is not the only thing Starbucks dominates in. They are also leading in sustainability!

Starbucks welcomes reusable cups for planet sustainability.

In June of 2021, Starbucks announced the return of its reusable cup acceptance policy in all its stores. According to Starbucks Stories, bringing back personal reusable cups is part of their ongoing commitment to reduce single-use cup waste by 50% by 2030.

It's important to note that Starbucks already accepted reusable cups before this year, but they had to pause it for safety & health concerns during the COVID19 pandemic.

Now it's back, but with a few new improvements and additions. We'll be addressing all the questions you may have about the recent developments.

Will Starbucks fill my Reusable cup?

"Starbucks may refuse to accept my reusable cup because we are still in the middle of a pandemic."
That is no longer true.
Starbucks has found a way to serve customers with reusable cups without subjecting them to the danger of coronavirus.

How does Starbucks fill a Reusable Coffee cup during COVID19?

Drive-throughs are a no-no for reusable cups.

While Starbucks continues to work on safety precautions for the drive-through avenue, you can currently only get coffee in reusable cups by walking into the coffeehouse.
How it works:

  1. The Barista looks inside your cup to be sure it's clean (open the lid of your cup).
  2. Place your cup in a ceramic mug for the Barista to collect.
  3. Your coffee is made contact-free.
  4. Retrieve your cup from the ceramic mug at the handoff.

Following these steps guarantees a safe and contactless exchange of coffee between you and the Barista.

What's in it for reusable cup owners?

To encourage more people to transition from single-use plastic cups to reusable cups, Starbucks offers discounted prices on reusable cup fills. That's right! You get 10 cents back just for buying your coffee in a reusable cup.
Saving you money and the planet at the same time.

Why is Starbucks bringing back disposable cups?

The Starbucks coffee chain uses approximately 7 billion cups per year which weighs against its goals of becoming resource positive.

Despite Starbucks' effort to see cup waste decrease, most of their beverages are sold in single-use cups—presumably, because most of us prefer having our drinks on the go, so cup waste is still a huge issue.

Reusable cups are vital to the sustainability of our planet, and Starbucks has not failed to recognize this truth. The company has made a global commitment to reduce single-use cup waste by 50% by 2030.

However, despite Starbucks' effort to see cup waste decrease, most of their beverages are sold in single-use cups—presumably, because most of us prefer having our drinks on the go, so cup waste is still a huge issue.

So why aren't people switching to reusable cups?

Old habits die hard. Myths about reusable cups have discouraged people from switching to reusable cups. Things like reusable cups being inconvenient to carry around compared to easily disposable single-use cups.

Perhaps if a more convenient option comes around, it would not be so hard to switch.
